A/PIA HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE 2013
at The University of Michigan
Mission Statement
As members of a dual identity community, Asian-American students are often caught in a divide between their historical heritage and American culture. Because they are uncertain about their unique identity, it is difficult for them to realize the creativity, energy, and individualism they each possess. The 2013 Asian American High School Conference seeks to explore various issues through a daylong series of empowering workshops, activities, performances, and special guests—all held in an exciting atmosphere here at the University of Michigan. By reaching out to Asian American high school students in underrepresented communities and the greater Ann Arbor and Detroit areas, we wish to provide them with a meaningful experience of learning through interaction with college students and their peers from different locations and backgrounds. Lastly, we urge these A/PIA students to take action in their high schools and local communities.

Theme: Resonate
The theme "Resonate" concentrates on the ways in which we resonate our identities and ideas into the world around us. It emphasizes how our actions affect others in our community and we hope to spread positive influence with this message. It is important to be in an environment in which expression is encouraged and celebrated, and we will focus on encouraging students to not be afraid to pursue their passions and connect with other people.

History of High School Conference at University of Michigan
Asian/ Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) High School Conference has had a long history as the only Asian American high school student-oriented conference held at the University of Michigan. The first conference was held in 1997 to modest beginnings. Since then, High School Conference has grown into a conference that attracts over 200 high school students to Ann Arbor from all over the Midwest, in places as far as Chicago.
This year, the 2013 High School Conference Core Committee aims to continue the tradition of educating high school students about Asian American issues while providing a fun and entertaining experience for all involved.
